CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. — A veteran lifeguard is warning beachgoers on how to respond when lightning is in the area.

Donovan Burns, a lifeguard with 25 years of experience, says there is still a risk of getting struck by lightning if you remain on the beach, even if you are not in the water.

“When thunder roars, go indoors,” said Burns. “It’s serious. Take safe haven.”

This advice comes one day after eight people were injured by a lightning strike on Clearwater Beach, near Frenchy’s Restaurant. One victim remains is in critical condition.

The strike occurred about 20 minutes after lifeguards ordered beachgoers out of the water, Burns said.

News of the lightning strike had many tourists on edge Monday afternoon. Mark Willis of Lexington Kentucky says he and his family will be taking precautions while visiting the beach.

“When we see lightning coming in, we’re going to get off pretty quick,” Willis said.
