TAMPA, Fla. — A Spectrum Bay News 9 viewer reached out to Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson to ask what can be done about drivers who can't seem to stay in their lane.

The state is now stepping in to address the problem.

Jose Valdez drives the intersection of Dale Mabry Highway and Boy Scout Road in Tampa and has identified two issues that need the state's attention.

One is the right turn lane on southbound Dale Mabry Highway at Boy Scout.

Cars wait till the last minute to merge into the lane, creating frustration for those who've already shifted to the right. Valdez said some signage better identifying the lane as a turn only before the intersection would help.

"I forgot the name of the poles they have on the street. The plastic poles, having some of those installed there for at least 50 meters, to prevent those last-minute drivers from merging into that turning lane." He'd like to see the lane delineation poles put on both the southbound Dale Mabry right lane and westbound Boy Scout road.

After making the right turn, many drivers hit the brakes in the turn lane because they want to turn left onto Grady Avenue but have to cross three lanes of traffic to do so

Henson asked the state to look at crash stats for this area. In the past nine years there have been three crashes attributed to drivers stopping in the right turn lane.

According to Florida Department of Transportation spokesman David Botello, installing poles would not keep folks from making that left onto Grady. It would only shorten the available distance they have to maneuver over three lanes, making the move more dangerous.

Based on our review, we are not recommending any corrective actions at this time," Botello said.

Valdez would like the state to keep the issue on their radar.

"Millions of dollars get allocated for traffic and highway safety, and little adjustments like this and busy areas will improve our traffic tremendously, so, please look into it before disregarding the request,” he said.
