MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Dogs who were surrendered in the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian are now calling Bradenton home.

  • Dogs surrendered in Bahamas flown to Bradenton after Dorian
  • 158 dogs and cats flown from Bahamas
  • 6 at Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue campus

In all, 158 dogs and cats were flown from the Bahamas early Monday morning to an airport in Ft. Lauderdale. From there, a handful of rescue organizations from across Florida came to pick up the animals.

Six of them were brought to Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue campus on Lorraine Road.

There, they are receiving vaccines, a medical exam, and any other necessary procedures. They will be quarantined in the rescue’s back barn for two weeks and cleared of any potential illness or complications before they can be adopted.

"Diseases that we vaccinate for regularly here are more common in some of the island and tropical nations,” explained Karissa Mayer, a team member at the rescue.

Each of the pups who made the trip from the Bahamas has their own distinct personality.

Robinson is lovable and has an injured paw. Big Mama is probably the friendliest of the group. Chico, who was just surrendered by his owner on September 10, was quiet and calm while lying on the shelter floor on Tuesday.

The dogs must be kept separate during the next two weeks and will have their own individual toys and food.

The staff at Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue is accepting donations of wet dog food and toys for the six pups. Donations can be brought to their facility on Lorraine Road during normal business hours.
