Just a couple of people were expected to attend U.S. Army veteran Edward Pearson’s funeral.

But after his obituary and invitation to his service went viral, more than 1,000 people showed up at Sarasota National Cemetery.

The 80-year-old Naples man died on August 31. His obituary was short, ending with the words, “This veteran has no immediately family all are welcome to attend.”

Since the obituary was posted three days ago, tens of thousands of people have shared it on social media. Pearson’s photo, along with his three-line obituary, is now circulating beyond the state of Florida.

"I'm clearing my schedule so I can show up,” said Sarasota resident Gordon Lippe, who saw the posting on Facebook.

Phil Solorzano, owner of Solorzano’s Pizzerias, is offering free slices to anyone who attends the service.

"As long as you go,” he said. “Go and show some love, then come over here after, and we'll give you a slice or a beer or whatever you want.”

Pearson served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964. He was honorably discharged and then enlisted in the Army Reserve.

After Hurricane Irma, the funeral director taking care of Pearson’s burial said he was a victim of a financial crime. He had just secured the funding needed to repair his damaged home when he died.
