CLEARWATER, Fla. — A Bay Area tragedy that made national headlines is now being turned into a movie.

  • Book called "Not Without Hope" to become a movie
  • Story portrays Nick Schuyler's survival at sea after boat accident
  • Schuyler lost three friends in the accident

Former University of South Florida player Nick Schuyler was the lone survivor of a tragic boat accident in 2009.

Schuyler and friends Will Bleakley, and NFL players Corey Smith and Marquis Cooper, were all out fishing in the gulf when a series of events led to their boat capsizing more than 70 miles from shore.

Schuyler was stranded for two days and found clinging to the capsized boat.

Schuyler wrote a book about what happened at sea called "Not Without Hope."  And now his story will soon be portrayed on the big screen.

Director of the film Rupert Wainwright said Schuyler wants to honor his friends and honor the efforts of the Coast Guard.

Schuyler said he still thinks about the accident every day.

"For a while there, I was trying to figure out things," Schuyler said. "Why me? Why this? And how did this happen? And I came to terms with it and understanding it was just an unfortunate circumstance and you know I'm only going to live once and I'm going to make the best of it. And that's what I'm trying to do."

In 2014, one of Schuyler's dreams came true when he opened his own gym in Lutz called Sky Athletix.

"I wanted to create something where it's laid back but it's fun," Schuyler said. "A good vibe."

Filming is slated to begin this Spring and Wainwright said it's likely some of the movie will be shot in Clearwater.
