TAMPA, Fla. — Hillsborough County Pet Resources held a drawing Thursday to determine which applicants will get the chance to adopt one of the hundreds of dogs seized from a Tampa breeder in September.

More than one thousand people submitted applications last Sunday for a chance at adopting one of the puppies.

"You just don't see something like this everyday," said Scott Trebatoski, Director of Pet Resources.

The county decided the best way to handle the process was to do a random, impartial drawing.

Workers folded all of the applications exactly the same way and placed them in a clear drum.

Then Tampa Bay Buccaneers punter Bradley Pinion gave it a spin and pulled names out.

Pinion said he wanted to participate because of his own love for animals and shelter dogs.

"It makes you feel on top of the world to have a dog want to come and sit on your lap after you may have just gotten booed during a game or may have had a bad kick and you feel the lowest of lows," Pinion explained. "To have your dog come and just lick your face and be like, 'I'm still here and I still love you' and you're like, 'Yeah, you know what, you're right,'" he said.

The names of 400 applicants were drawn. About 320 will get "first dibs" on the dogs up for adoption, while the other 80 will be on "standby."

The county hopes to send out emails to everyone who applied on Friday to let them know their status.

Those who are chosen to adopt can select and pick up their dogs on Sunday at All People's Life Center.

Applicants who are not selected will be offered a reduced fee if they want to adopt another animal from the shelter.
