Thanksgiving dinner is a tradition for many families, but for some, that meal can seem out of reach. Because of this, Resurrection Life Food Pantry is delivering or distributing about 900 Thanksgiving dinners — 190 are going to veterans in crisis.

"It's a community food pantry and the community has jumped on board to support us. Remember we're a Cheektowaga food pantry, but we've had donations from Hamburg, Amherst, Tonawanda, Clarence... We're amazed by the support from the entire Western New York community," said Kim Reynolds, Resurrection Life Food Pantry director.

On Wednesday, case managers from the VA and volunteers have been delivering the meals to the veterans.

"The veterans that we work with are lower income and the VA does whatever they can to make sure that they have what they need. And having a turkey and all the fixings to help for the holiday with your family, I feel goes a long way with them," said Alicia Sholtz, of the VA's Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program.

The VA is even able to identify veterans in need with larger families, so that more food can be provided.

"Often people feel that veterans need to be given the stuff that they need to take care of themselves. We're showing them that we're out in the community, linking with them, and making sure that their basic needs are met," said Sholtz.

The pantry has all of the food that they need for Thanksgiving; however, volunteers are still needed. If you are interested in helping, you can call 716-608-3400.
