Authorities said Sgt. Felicia Pecora, a 19-year veteran of the department, and Officer Hope Dauphin, a 5-year veteran, were investigating a report of shots fired in the 100 block of E. Flora Street around 1:38 p.m. when they found 30-year-old Derrick Everett in a backyard shed.

When police ordered Everett to show his hands, they say he turned to them and pointed a gun in their direction, forcing them to fire at him.

Everett was shot multiple times. The officers immediately performed first aid on Everett and called medical personnel to the scene.  He was transported shortly after to St. Joseph's Hospital where he died.

"They're out here on Thanksgiving. They were looking out for the city. And they were required to use deadly force today," Eddy Durkin said.

The family said they were not notified about the shooting until almost 9 hours later and that they can't get information because Everett's girlfriend is now in protective custody.

Police have not released any details on what was going on at the house that led to the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
