Police officers will be out in full force as shoppers migrate from one mall to another.

Officers will be on foot, on bicycles, in cars, and even atop a mobile surveillance tower at Westfield Countryside Mall, located in the northeast corner of the mall parking lot between Crunch Fitness and J.C. Penney.

Officers will also be conducting enhanced patrols at Clearwater Mall, Walmart, and the shopping centers at U.S. 19 and Drew Street, and U.S. 19 and Sunset Point Road.

"We want Clearwater shoppers to feel safe when they are going about their holiday shopping," said Chief Dan Slaughter. "Officers will be out there to deter crime but also to help educate the public."

Here are some things shoppers can do to make sure they stay safe:

  • Always lock your doors.
  • Never store valuables in plain sight inside your vehicle.
  • Don't ever leave your keys in your car.
  • Park in a well-lit area if you are shopping at night.
  • Don't be distracted by being on your cell phone or carrying too many packages that you can't see as you approach your car. Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • When you can, take a friend or family member with you.
  • Have your car keys in your hand when you near your vehicle. Don't fumble around in your purse or clothing for your keys.
  • If you see any suspicious activity, call Clearwater Police at 727-562-4242.
