HAINES CITY, Fla. — A Haines City native is headed to the Super Bowl, but not to play in the game. Instead, he'll be there to help San Francisco 49ers players look sharp.

Barber Tavion Maultsby grew up in Haines City, and worked as a barber for ten years in his mother’s shop before moving to the San Francisco Bay area three years ago.

"I just decided it was a better situation for me at the time to grow,” said Maultsby, who often goes by “Tee da Barber.”

He estimates he now cuts hair for about 40 players on the 49ers, including superstars Richard Sherman and Nick Bosa.

He’s performed haircuts in their homes, team hotel, and the locker room.

"I’ve been to the stadium as early as 5 o'clock in the morning. I’ve been there as late as 9:30, 10 at night,” said Maultsby.

While being an on-demand, on-call barber can be difficult, he said he loves the perks such as free tickets to games.

Maultsby said his athlete clientele started coming in when wide receiver Kendrick Bourne randomly stopped by the Barbers Inc. barber shop where he works out of in San Jose.

"He just walked into the shop and I gave him a good haircut and he basically went back and told all of his teammates,” explained Maultsby, who said networking and word-of-mouth has been key to his success.

While the players’ hair isn't on full display during games, Maultsby said it's still important for them to have a fresh cut.

"These guys are doing interviews every single day. That started Monday and goes all the way to Sunday and then after the game, too," Maultsby explained. "Guys want to look their best. They say if you look good, you play good, as well."

He'll be cutting hair every day in Miami leading up to the Super Bowl. As for who is going to win, he has confidence in — you guessed it — the 49ers.
