PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — The man convicted of killing a 14-year-old boy in a 2018 drive-by shooting was sentenced Friday to life in prison. 

Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Mary Handsel sentenced Steve Marin to life in prison with a minimum mandatory of 25 years.

Marin was found guilty of second-degree murder last month in the February 14, 2018, slaying of Christian Robinson, who was 14.

"Not only did you destroy your life, you destroyed a lot of people's lives," Robinson family friend Melissa Forgey said in court.

Robinson was in the back seat of a car waiting at the U-turn lane on southbound US-19 near Ridge Crest Drive when the shooting happened, according to police reports.

Another car was also waiting to turn. 

According to Pasco County Sheriff’s Office documents, the driver of the car Robinson was in turned and the second vehicle followed. Shots were fired from the second vehicle, hitting Robinson. The teen died from his injuries three days later.

Marin, 28, was arrested in March, 2018.

Judge Mary Handsel asked Marin on Friday if he'd like to speak in court. Through an interpreter, Marin said it wouldn't matter what he said, so he declined.

Members of the Robinson family, along with friends, did speak in court.

"I have been on a traumatic rollercoaster of nausea, panic, anxiety levels I did not know were possible," said grandmother Ellen Chieco.

Judge Handsel said she thinks the crime was both impulsive and cold and calculating. She said Marin's decisions will affect those who knew Christian for the rest of their lives.

The sentence comes with a with a minimum mandatory of 25 years.
