CLEARWATER, Fla. — Dr. Matt Kellogg goes out of his way to make math fun for his Calvary Christian High School students.

But his real math mission is even bigger: Take a complex topic like AP Honors Calculus and make it approachable and relatable.

"They should take great pride it the fact that they’re doing something difficult," Kellogg said of his 11th and 12th grade students. "Like for example, the last time I looked, less than  2-percent of high school students even attempt AP Calculus."

With a PhD in Math Education, Kellogg breaks down some of the most difficult courses on his school's Clearwater campus.

"I've never had a teacher that was able to take such a complex subject and in one sentence, summarize it perfectly," said Calvary Christian Senior Jonathan Juliano.

Kellogg takes the difficult subject matter and makes it relevant to student's lives - and their futures.

"There are certain topics in math that some of them will never see again," Kellogg said. "But if we can teach them to persevere and to solve problems, that will be valuable at any job."

And solving that equation is what describes Kellogg's 32 years of teaching. He truly loves teaching and his students.

Calvary Christian Senior Naya Hart said Dr. Kellogg not only follows his student's lives but checks up on them.

"Your kids will love what you love," Kellogg said. "If you love them.

"If they now you care about them, the will care about - I mean teaching math is important to me, it’s my job. So I need to do a good job. They help in that by doing their part and if they know I care about them, then they will care about math."
