CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. — Spring break season is officially underway, and despite warnings from officials to stay home, many vacationers in Clearwater Beach say it wasn’t worth sacrificing a good time.

“I mean, it affects older people more than it affects us, and that’s why we’re here. It’s spring break. We’re having a great time. Not too worried about it,” said Luc Cantrell, a student at the University of Tennessee.

That seems to be the consensus among many millennials in Clearwater Beach for spring break.

The city is packed with people who tell us coronavirus is not a threat to them, so why stay home?

Dr. Deepa Verma at Syngeristiq Integrated Health tries to clear that up.

“Basically you’re younger, you’re healthier, your immune system is more robust and more active. But you can still be a carrier even though you’re a-symptomatic," she said. "So again, the key is just going to be staying away from people. We have to quarantine ourselves. It’s going to be really tough on people but this is the way we’re going to kind of put this at bay for now."

Verma says the best way to tackle the coronavirus right now is through preventative measures, so aside from staying home, she says wash your hands and don’t touch your face.

Beaches in Miami and Ft. Laurederdale are now closed, but so far, Clearwater Beach is still open for business.
