PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- Two Pinellas County high school seniors had a magical prom Saturday night, thanks to their parents, who stepped in after prom was canceled at their schools.

Macy Maiocco and Liam Kugler, who have been dating for a year, said it was a total shock.

The day started off with their parents telling them to come together to take part in an “activity,” which they initially thought was another chore.

It ended up being a scavenger hunt that led them to places meaningful in their relationship.

Toward the end, they ended up receiving corsages and were told to get dressed and put on their prom attire.

A limo van escorted them to Maiocco’s parents' new condo, which is under renovation. It’s located on the water in Dunedin. There, the couple found the condo decked out with a photo wall and an outdoor dance floor on the patio that looked like a nightclub.

"I’m just so happy that we could have that night. It’s just a magical thing that I didn’t think that... I had no concept that this was going to happen," Kugler said. "I’m just like really thankful to have her there and spend time with her and for our parents to do this for us. I still have a smile on my face thinking about it."

The parents didn’t miss a detail, even declaring the two prom king and queen, and giving them sashes and a tiara.

“Our parents definitely put a lot of time into this and you could tell,” Maiocco said.

Kugler said in some ways, it was better than traditional prom. He liked that no one was there to judge his dancing.

"I’m a terrible dancer, and I could just let loose I guess,” Kugler said.

Kugler’s dad, Brad, said it was the least the parents could do, considering his son will now have a virtual graduation where he will have to give the class president speech on Zoom.

"It’s his senior year. They’re going off to college separately. And you know it’s the memories that count. Without any memories, it would just be a bummer that they didn’t have any of the formal senior year activities,” Brad Kugler said.

Maiocco said it was a night they will never forget.

"It was super special. And it kind of brought us back to how things used to be before (coronavirus)," she said.

"We’re so grateful for what our parents did, and we’re so lucky have them like care about us this much to throw something like that,” Liam Kugler said.
