MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Since the coronavirus pandemic swept across the United States, nonprofits everywhere have been struggling to stay afloat.

As they continue to work in their communities at a time when need has never been greater, their supplies are running low.

The hope is that this week's upcoming "Giving Challenge" will change that.

Starting Tuesday, hundreds of area nonprofits will be advocating online as part of the Giving Challenge, presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, to raise funds they desperately need.

Abby Dundin, communications director for Agape Flights, a faith-based organization that brings food, supplies, and hope to impoverished islands in the Caribbean, called the event "imperative."

“If you think resources are scarce here, think of third-world countries, they are very scarce there,” said Dundin. “The timing for this is so critical, not just for us, but for the other nonprofits."

The Center of Anna Maria Island is another nonprofit participating in the challenge. With their recent mini-reefs initiative, they have been able to educate and promote cleaner water in hopes of reducing the effects of red tide across the Bay area.

That work takes dedicated people, and Jim McDaniel, Director of Development at The Center of Anna Maria Island, said his organization is dedicated to looking out for each and every one of them.

“We work really hard to make sure we are taking care of the mind, body and spirit of everyone involved in it,” McDaniel said.

Drug Free Manatee is also taking part in the Challenge. This coalition works hands-on with Manatee County's youth.

“We need to respond to the voices our young people are making,” says program director Dr. Linda Thompson.

At one time, the county led the nation with skyrocketing numbers during the opioid epidemic. Drug Free Manatee continues to work to bring those numbers down, even while in quarantine due to a pandemic.

“It isn’t just about wearing the masks, it isn’t just about social distancing," says Thompson. "It’s also about what you’re doing inside your homes to keep healthy habits going.”

These organizations are just some of the many nonprofits taking part in the event, which starts at noon on April 28 and runs for 24 hours.

Donations that range from $25 to $100 will be matched by the Patterson Foundation
