TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police are investigating an overnight shooting that left a suspect dead.

  • Tampa police shoot, kill suspect late Tuesday
  • No officers injured in shooting during traffic stop
  • Suspect identified as Jonas Joseph, 26, of Princeton, Florida

No officers were injured in the incident, which began at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday during a traffic stop on East Palifox Street near 34th Street.

Officers said as they were attempting to pull over a man believed to be a suspect in a previous shooting, he jumped out of his white Chevy Impala and opened fire on officers.

That's when officers fired back.

No officers were struck and the man was shot and killed. He has been identified as Jonas Joseph, 26, of Princeton, Florida.

Police officials said Joseph was a suspect in an April 24 shooting at Grant Park.

Authorities said five officers were involved in the shooting. As standard, the officers involved will be on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

The investigation is still under way.
