TRINITY, Fla. — As the final week of school arrives in Pasco County, teachers are facing a new challenge: How to calculate grades.

What You Need To Know

  • Last week of school around the Bay area, including in Pasco County
  • Pasco teachers utilizing new system for final grades
  • Amended student grading plan approved last week

When it comes to secondary students, like those who attend Mitchell High School, teachers can't turn to factors like finals or end-of-course exams.

Instead, they're taking into account performance throughout the semester.

According to Spectrum Bay News 9’s partner newspaper The Tampa Bay Times, this is part of an amended student progression plan the school board adopted last week.

For high school students, grades for the third and fourth quarters will be averaged to get their final grade in a class.

There will also be changes when it comes to determining whether students move on to the next grade.

For instance, third graders who would have been held back because of state reading test results could still move on to the next grade.

It will now be up to teachers -- with input from parents and school leaders -- to decide if a student needs to repeat the year.

Classroom performance and other factors will also be taken into consideration.

Also added onto the long list of changes students have already seen this school year -- honor roll recognitions have also been put on hold.

The district instead is suggesting students be recognized in other ways for their achievements during distance learning.
