TAMPA, Fla. — Following the death of George Floyd, the trending hashtag called #eight-can't-wait has picked up momentum nationwide, including in the Bay area.

What You Need To Know

The changes this campaign is pushing for are things like banning chokeholds, warnings before shooting, and stopping excessive use of force.

The hashtag came from the national group called Campaign Zero.

The group has been on the forefront of many protests, pushing to end police violence around the county.

Bay area law enforcement leaders are discussing making a committee to review these policies.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said his agency already has policies in place that align with the campaign.

“It always goes back to establishing relationships,” Chronister said. “The most important thing that comes out of a relationship is trust, there is no magic wand, you earn it one encounter, one relationship at a time and that’s important to me.”

Other departments that are making changes are the Sarasota and Temple Terrace police departments. As of this week, they have removed the use of choke holds, all in effort to be more transparent.

The Tampa Police department also responded to the movement.

The department tweeted out pictures this week with each of the eight action items as well as a like to the department's standard operating procedures.

Mayor Jane Castor, also Tampa's former chief of police, said the department follows all eight policies.
