RIVERVIEW, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man in connection to a homicide last month involving a child.

According to authorities, deputies received a call July 19 at 9:15 a.m. in reference to an unresponsive child at a Riverview home.

Patrol units arrived and discovered the child had suffered lacerations and bruising on their body. At the time, the child was in the care of David Vasquez Malave, 23. The victim was transported to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The following day, the child was pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner's Office declared the manner of death a homicide.

"No child should ever have to suffer as this young victim did," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "This should never happen. It's an unthinkable tragedy. I am absolutely horrified with the actions by this suspect, and he will be charged to the fullest extent of the law."

Vasquez Malave was arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse.

He remains at the Falkenburg Road Jail without bond.
