HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. - In the past 90 days, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office answered to an average of two to four vehicle burglaries a night, but that number more than tripled over the weekend.

What You Need To Know

A video obtained by a Hernando County resident showed what he referred to as another frustrating evening.

"I was asleep," the victim said. "It was approximately 2 a.m. Sunday morning the 23rd and I heard one of my cameras alert me that there was motion.”

The motion was someone trying to get inside both of his vehicles. “One car circled my court, four guys jumped out of the car, the driver stayed in it and they hit three or four houses in this court.”

The Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer, Denise Maloney stated, “We have a record of 28 vehicle burglaries and they were all unlocked vehicles.”

Maloney said within the past month, of all the vehicle burglaries reported, 81 percent of those were unlocked.

The Sheriff’s Office recommends to put the vehicle in the garage if possible but if not take all the valuables out - most important your firearm - and lock the car before you go to sleep.

Luckily for the resident and his neighbors, the burglars walked away empty handed but he said its not the first time this has happened.

“This is the fourth time that I know of, twice I actually observed them, twice it was on camera." He said with a simple click on the key fob, valuables and firearms wont end up in the wrong hands.

Pasco and Pinellas county also saw a large number of vehicle burglaries that same night. With the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office is researching if any of these incidents are related.
