TAMPA, Fla. — The TECO Line Streetcar is on its way to extend its route into North Tampa.

The transportation line announced on Tuesday that it is the recipient of $67.3 million for the Streetcar Extension and Modernization project.

The grant is the largest single transit award that has ever been given to Tampa Bay.

“We will be able to have up and running, a system that will expand from this location here, all the way down to Tampa Heights,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said at the funding award event Tuesday afternoon.

“We have future plans for a system that will go northward out toward USF and then also east and west. East to the east Tampa residential area and commerce locations, but also westward out to Westshore and out to the airport,” Mayor Castor added.

“Today we are looking at turning the streetcar into a completely valid mass transit system,” Michael English, president of the TECO Streetcar board said.

The expected completion date of this project is the end of 2026.
