Reps. Paul Tonko and Antonio Delgado joined other Democrats Thursday in calling on Congress to remove President Trump from office.

Citing Wednesday's violent takeover of the Capitol by pro-Trump protesters, Tonko urged House members to advance articles of impeachment, while Delgado said the president must be removed from office by his own cabinet or Congress.

Tonko said the president should be impeached for his role in inciting a riot as Congress gathered to count electoral votes confirming Joe Biden as the nation's 46th president.

"As the crowd forced its way inside, the doors to our House chamber were locked, and my colleagues and I were asked to hide under chairs to prevent being struck by stray bullets," Tonko said in a statement. "When we were able to evacuate the House gallery, we did so by jumping over rows of chairs while wearing gas masks as officers barricaded the doors with guns drawn."

Tonko called it "nothing less than an attempted coup." He repeated his call Friday morning on Twitter.

In a separate statement, Delgado said the president was unfit for office.

“Yesterday, a core tenant of our democracy – the peaceful transition of power – came under siege," Delgado said. "And in appalling fashion, the siege occurred in the people’s house. Just hours earlier, President Trump gave a speech to his supporters in front of the White House, where he not only spewed baseless claims of election fraud, but also proclaimed to those listening, ‘You’ll never take back our country with weakness, you have to show strength, and you have to be strong.’”
