TAMPA, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County is taking COVID-19 vaccinations mobile.

The Health Department along with community partners at the University of South Florida and Aging Services say they will target 350 senior communities in the upcoming weeks as vaccinations become available.

What You Need To Know

The mobile vaccination will happen at the same time the county continues to run vaccinations through its designated vaccination sites.

The Health Department said seniors are the most vulnerable in the community for complications due to COVID-19, but they are also some of the most challenged to book appointments and get to vaccination sites on their own.

The Health Department's Kevin Watler said vaccination teams will come to seniors.

"We know that it is kind of difficult for them to get to the public sites or even for them to just get a reservation,” Watler said. “So if we come to them, we know what we are hitting, that we are hitting the 65 plus communities that are more vulnerable.  We want to make sure we are getting to them and making it as easy as possible."

Because the county does not know how many vaccines it will have available week to week, it is not putting out a list of communities to notify them when they can expect vaccinations.

Health Department officials said it will notify communities individually when vaccines will be available for mobile doses.
