HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — Getting more seniors vaccinated is the goal for Gov. Ron DeSantis, and he made that goal clear Wednesday morning in Brooksville where he announced additional vaccine doses will be made available in the county.

  •  Hernando County is in the bottom 5% of seniors who have been vaccinated in the state, DeSantis said

  • He promised an additional 2,250 doses for the county over the next three days

DeSantis said Hernando County is in the bottom 5% of seniors that have been vaccinated in the State of Florida and he said his goal is to get more vaccines into the county and get more seniors vaccinated.

Relief, that’s the emotion and the feeling for seniors in Hernando County who have been able to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and DeSantis said he is making sure more seniors there can feel that relief, too.

“If you look at the statistics in terms of vaccinations in seniors, Florida is doing very well at the same time not every county is doing the same,” DeSantis said.

"We’re going to have 2,250 vaccines over the next three days for seniors,” he said.

High Point resident, Diana Kowitzke said it will be nice to get back to a semblance of normality once vaccines are widely available.

"Hopefully we won’t have to wear these pretty soon," she said. "That’d be nice, and I just think that having this vaccination is going to be positive for everyone.”

DeSantis told Bay News 9 bringing vaccines to senior communities will help close the gap...especially for those who aren’t able to sign up online at a local pharmacy.

“I do think when we are doing these because the community works to sign people up, that really does that some of the burden off some of those concerns about technology, about some of these others,” Governor DeSantis.

He is calling on other interested senior communities to reach out to get their residents vaccinated.

The Hernando County health department will open their patient portal on Sunday at 3 pm for all those 65 years and older, who are interested in getting the vaccine, to sign up.

The governor was asked about US Representative Charlie Crist's call for an investigation into him. Critics say The Governor has prioritized making vaccines available in Republican-heavy counties.

The Governor responded, “There’re some people who are more upset at me for vaccinating seniors than they are for other governors whose policies have killed seniors, and that is a joke.”
