NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - The Chasco Fiesta usually takes over downtown New Port Richey this time of year. Yet, for the second straight year, it’s been canceled due to COVID-19.

That’s why organizers are trying to save one of its more unique traditions: The Native American Pow Wow, which is taking place this weekend at Sims Park.

What You Need To Know

  • Chasco Fiesta 2021 canceled

  • The iconic Native American event was canceled last year, too, because of COVID

  • Native American Pow Wow will go on with precautions

“It’s important to carry on that tradition. We’re representing all different tribes here,” co-organizer Otter Oliver said.

Oliver says he is part of the Cree and Dakota tribes, and he’s excited to see this part return Chasco Fiesta.

“It’s great – just to get something going. Represent Native America,” Oliver said.

He described the Pow Wow as a tradition that celebrates all Native American tribes, through things like dancing, crafts and history. It’s usually part of the annual Chasco Fiesta. For the second year in a row, the nine-day event was canceled due to coronavirus.

Usually it brings thousands to New Port Richey for parades, concerts and a carnival. Organizers say it’s important to keep it going somehow.

“We did not have it last year. We’re struggling right now right to keep Chasco alive,” Exec. Director Patty Deremer said.

Mayor Rob Marlowe says the city is helping to sponsor the event, which will have social distancing and mask requirements. It’ll also be a testing ground for future events this year at the park.

“We can start with this. Keep everyone social distanced. Keep them protected and safe. Start trying to get life back down to normal,” Marlowe said.

The hope is this scaled-back version will lead to the big return of Chasco Fiesta in 2022, which will be its 100th anniversary.

The event starts on Friday and goes all weekend. Admission is $5.

  • Friday 3/19: 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Saturday 3/20: 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Sunday 3/21: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Organizers hope to have other events celebrating Chasco Fiesta throughout the year.  You can find more information here.
