HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A petition calling for Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent to resign is quickly gaining signatures after he announced about a thousand jobs would be cut to help balance the budget.

Dozens of parents and teachers spoke at Tuesday’s school board meeting arguing that cutting teachers is not the right approach.

“In May, I go into the pool and it goes by seniority, and if I'm in that pool when they call my name, hopefully, there's something for me to pick from,” said Lashonda Wilburn, Teacher.

The group ‘Friends and Family of Hillsborough County Schools’ launched an online petition calling for the resignation of Superintendent Davis and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Michael Kemp.

This all comes after the District notified some teachers Friday that their positions would be eliminated, meaning they could potentially be moved to another school or let go.

Many gathered to protest outside the board meeting, but Superintendent Davis said the financial problems aren’t his fault, and the budget needs to be fixed to prevent a state takeover.

“Addison Davis didn't create this financial problem, but I'm here trying to find solutions to this process. I protected teachers in the first half and employees, other than 40, and I will do my best once again to try to protect everyone in this organization as much and as long as we can,” said Superintendent Davis.

The District is looking to eliminate about 1000 school-based positions. The Teachers Union is asking the District to come up with a placement plan for any teachers impacted by the cuts.
