TAMPA, Fla. — It’s National Bike Month, and to kick it off, the City of Tampa and Sidewalk Stompers hosted a ‘Bike to School’ day at Broward Elementary School.

“We're looking to see safer routes to school for kids walking and biking. Not everybody has a car ride to school, not everybody should have a car ride to school. You need to have alternative forms of transportation and making sure there's a safe route so all kids can access education is part of what our goal is,” said Emily Hinsdale, President of Sidewalk Stompers.

Sidewalk Stompers is a local nonprofit that works with students to improve their health and safety by promoting walking and biking and teaching them to do it safely.

As part of the program, they give away bikes and scooters once a month and hold events like “Bike to School Day.”

On Wednesday, students from Broward Elementary met at Rivercrest Park where they heard from Baycare’s Kids Wellness and Safety Center about road safety, then they all walked and biked down the street to school together where Tampa Mayor Jane Castor greeted them.

Sidewalk Stompers also helps promote the Mayor’s ‘Vision Zero’ plan, which calls for pedestrian safety as a top priority when planning roads and communities.

Wednesday’s ‘Bike to School’ event was sponsored by Broward Elementary School, Tampa Bay Super Bowl LV Forever 55, BayCare Kids Wellness & Safety Center, and the South Seminole Heights Civic Association.
