TAMPA, Fla. — A 9-year-old was shot in the area of Grant Park Thursday night, officials with the Tampa Police Department said.

The shooting happened at about 8 p.m. near Grant Park, in the area of 30th Avenue and 54th Street North, police said.

The incident started as a fight between two groups, and when gunfire was exchanged, the 9-year-old was hit by a stray bullet, investigators said.

"The child was conscious and breathing when taken to a nearby hospital," TPD said in a statement. 

The child was taken to an area hospital. The child's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

No arrests have officially been made in the shooting.

The shooting remains under investigation, police said.
