TAMPA, Fla. — Highway traffic remains snarled in downtown Tampa Tuesday morning as the westbound ramp from Interstate 4 onto southbound Interstate 275 is closed after an earlier crash.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the interstate crash happened after a driver drove off from an attempted traffic stop on SR 400 near Orient Road.

Troopers said the driver of a 2017 Nissan Maxima was spotted without its headlights on just after 3 a.m. When authorities tried to stop the driver, a pursuit ensued with speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

The Nissan drove onto the southbound ramp to I-275 and collided with a semi truck transporting milk.

Following the crash, the driver, Willie D. Lloyd, Jr. attempted to flee the crash scene on foot, but was soon apprehended. Lloyd, 40, suffered minor injuries.

A 31-year-old female passengers suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital. 

Lloyd has been charged with DUI, DUI serious injury, fleeing and eluding, driving while license suspended, leaving the scene of a crash with injury, resisting without violence and a burglary warrant from Pinellas County.
