TAMPA, Fla. — A wrong-way driver was killed early Wednesday when his vehicle went off a downtown ramp onto the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 30-year-old man died just when he attempted to exit the Expressway at the Tampa Street entrance ramp just after 2 a.m.

Troopers said he lost control of his 2014 Chevrolet Sonic, causing the vehicle to collide with and flip over a concrete barrier wall.

The vehicle landed in the intersection of Brorein Street and Franklin Street. The driver, whose name has not been released, died at the scene.

Troopers said it remains unknown why the vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction.
