  • Some said they feel the suspension is Gov. Ron DeSantis overruling their vote

  • FL Rep. Fentrice Driskell said the suspension is a political move and doesn’t make the community safer

  • Protesters said the suspension is an attack against women and the LGBTQ+ community

“I’ve been a supporter of Andrew Warren, really, since he started running. The people of Tampa have elected him twice,” said local resident Ken Key. He came to protest the suspension.

“I don’t think Gov. DeSantis has the right to come in and overrule the voters of the county,” said fellow protester Lauren Wike.

One speaker called Warren’s suspension an attack against women and the LGBTQ+ community.

DeSantis said Warren put himself above the law when he signed letters saying he wouldn’t support prohibitions on sex change operations for minors or prosecute abortion cases.

“This is clearly a political move by Governor DeSantis that actually has nothing to do with keeping our community safer,” said FL Rep. Fentrice Driskell, incoming Democratic leader for the state House.

Driskell told the crowd she’s watched DeSantis grow power and target political opponents during the past four years. She stressed the importance of elections and urged the crowd to head to the polls this fall.
