Democratic gubernatorial nominee Charlie Crist has made his choice for a running mate.

Karla Hernandez-Mats, the top teacher’s union rep in Florida’s largest public school district, will run alongside Crist.

Florida Education Association President Andrew Spar confirmed the choice to Spectrum News.

“We’re thrilled by Charlie Crist’s choice for his running mate. Karla Hernandez-Mats will be a great lieutenant governor of and for all the people of Florida. She’s a mom with two kids in our public schools, a teacher focused on students with special needs, and cares deeply about children, families and communities.”

Crist is expected to make the official announcement Saturday morning.

Hernandez-Mats has served three terms as president of the United Teachers of Dade.

Earlier this week, Crist won the primary over Nikki Fred.
