TAMPA, Fla. — A University of Tampa student was shot and killed as he attempted to get into a man’s car early Saturday morning, according to the Tampa Police Department.

The student has been identified as Carson Senfield, a 2021 graduate of Orchard Park High School in New York, according to the school district's superintendent in a statement.

According to witnesses, the student was hanging out with friends on South Howard Avenue and had caught an Uber to his home near the 1000 block of W Arch St. just prior to the incident, police said.

Officials said after the student got out of his Uber, he attempted to get into the car of another man who was parked nearby.

The driver, who police said did not know the student or why he was forcing his way into his vehicle and feared for his life, shot the student in the upper body.

The student died at the scene, officials said.

The University of Tampa administration sent out a message to students and faculty on Saturday.

"The UT administration is deeply saddened to report that a UT student was killed early this morning near the intersection of W. Arch and N. Munro streets," the staff said in the statement. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the student’s family and friends, as well as all who were affected by this incident. The University values all members of the community and mourns this tragic loss."

Police said that the shooter remained at the scene and is cooperating with detectives, and that any potential charges would be decided by the State Attorney’s Office.

The University is also cooperating with the Tampa Police Department in its investigation of the incident.

Orchard Park CSD Superintendent David Lilleck provided a message to families on Sunday, saying in part:

"Given Carson’s wide circle of friends, and the fact that Carson’s two siblings attend OPHS, the Orchard Park School District recognizes that his passing has a far-reaching impact. In order to support current and former students, the District has established a network of support. Counselors will be available for those in need.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Senfield family during this difficult time. Carson was a light in this world and will forever be a Quaker."
