Ferguson, who had been reported missing on Aug. 12, turned 16 just four days before she was shot to death.

Investigators say her body was found by deputies about 7 p.m. Monday near a car outside a home in the 5300 block of Broken Pine Drive near Hiawassee Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office did not reveal any details about a possible suspect by as of Tuesday afternoon, but said in a statement that “homicide detectives are working diligently to find and arrest her killer.”

A missing person report had been filed for Ferguson on Aug. 12 after Orlando police responded to the Department of Children and Families office on South Kirkman Road in reference to a missing juvenile. The Orlando Police Department received confirmation from the National Crime Information Center that the shooting victim was the juvenile who had been reported missing.

Neighbors said they did not see what happened but did hear a large bang outside, followed by screams to “call 911.” Emergency sirens soon followed, they said.

“I’m feeling bad because that’s, that’s a little girl, you know,” said Maria, who lives a few homes down from the scene and did not want her last name revealed. “I was thinking that was a woman but, it turns out, it’s just a little girl so, I’m feeling bad.”

Similarly, area resident Benedict Newball said he was upset by the teen's death.

“It’s sad, really sad," he said. "I have kids — a 14- and a 10-year-old.”
