TAMPA, Fla. — AAA will be offering free theft prevention labeling on drivers’ catalytic converters while their vehicles are being serviced at either of AAA’s two Tampa Bay Car Care locations, the auto club announced Tuesday.

One of the AAA technicians will apply a non-removable, etched ID label to catalytic converters which then can be registered in the theft prevention database.

What You Need To Know

  • AAA will be offering free theft prevention etching on drivers’ catalytic converters at their Tampa Bay Car Care locations

  • Drivers do not have to be AAA members, but the offer is only available while supplies last

Catalytic converter theft is a growing problem in Tampa Bay and across the United States. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, 3,389 catalytic converters were reported stolen in 2019. That number skyrocketed 1,215% in 2021.

Reported cases in Hillsborough County increased 50% from 2021 to 2022, according to data from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

A catalytic converter is located underneath the vehicle and part of its exhaust system. Thieves target them for the precious metals inside. These metals have become more valuable due to recent supply chain disruptions. While it’s a quick cash grab for thieves, their victims are left paying hundreds to thousands of dollars to repair the damage.

Car owners will immediately know if their catalytic converter has been stolen when they start the engine. Without the catalytic converter, the vehicle will make a loud, roaring sound. The "check engine" light may also come on and owners may notice the vehicle not driving as smoothly.

Drivers do not have to be AAA members, but the offer is only available while supplies last, so AAA encourages to call in advance to make an appointment at either of these locations:

AAA also offered additional tips for anyone trying to protect themselves against catalytic converter theft:

  • Visit one of two Tampa Bay Car Care Facilities to have your vehicle’s catalytic converter registered with a national crime prevention database, which is accessible by authorities and recyclers.
  • Consider installing an anti-theft device over your catalytic converter, like a shield, cage or steel cables.
  • Park in a garage or well-lit public area. Consider a spot that would make it difficult for thieves to get underneath your car.
  • Review your auto insurance policy. See if you have comprehensive coverage. This provides protection from damage caused by an incident other than a crash, including theft.
