TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Scott will not become Sen. Scott until January 8.

  • Gov. Scott technically should be sworn into the Senate on Jan. 3
  • That would mean he would have to resign as Florida governor
  • He will now be sworn in 5 days later

That's the day his successor, Ron DeSantis, is sworn in as governor of Florida. It's also five days after U.S. senators are sworn into office.

Technically, Scott should resign and then attend the swearing-in ceremony in Washington, D.C. on January 3. That would mean Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera would have to be sworn in as governor for five days.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has agreed to allow Scott to be sworn in a few days later, after his term as governor is complete.

DeSantis is sworn in as governor in Tallahassee at noon on Monday, January 8. A Scott spokesman says Scott will be sworn in later in the afternoon.

Scott unseated Democrat Bill Nelson in the November election.
