For nearly two decades, Scott Harrell has been covering Tampa Bay area arts, culture and politics. In May 2020, he joined Spectrum Bay News 9 as its first Digital Journalist.
A self-proclaimed military brat, Scott was born in Orlando, lived in Miami as a child, and came to Tampa from Texas for school. When he discovered St. Petersburg, he fell in love with what was then a very small, very funky city, and has been on this side of the bay ever since.
Scott’s first professional job, writing about local music for the late St. Petersburg zine Focus, led to freelancing for publications across the state and eventually a staff position at long-running Bay area alternative weekly newspaper and website Creative Loafing (then Weekly Planet). He helped hone the paper’s voice and expand its digital efforts as a critic, columnist, news reporter and editor, winning multiple Society of Professional Journalists and Association of Alternative Newsweeklies awards along the way. His writing also appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Bradenton Herald and Radar magazine among many other outlets.
He took the helm of Creative Loafing’s editorial department as Editor-in-Chief in early 2018, overseeing staff and contributors while further enhancing the paper’s online presence until the fall of 2019.
Scott remains dedicated to delivering engaging and enlightening content to our communities.
When he’s not chasing down stories, Scott enjoys fishing, reading, songwriting and playing music with his friends.
