HOLIDAY, Fla. — A busy intersection in Pasco County is being called down right dangerous by residents.

Changes to a traffic signal might be key to making the area safer.

This week's Traffic Inbox looks at the intersection of U.S. 19 and Flora Avenue in Holiday.

Michelle Demers lives nearby and says it's a dangerous place to drive.

"I've seen the fronts of cars ripped right off. I've seen motorcycles hit in this same spot," Demers said.

She said it happens at least once a week. And it happened to her and a friend recently. They were coming out of a neighborhood and were hit by another vehicle.

Flora Avenue takes a lot of extra traffic as a cut-through from Alternate U.S. 19. That creates a desperation for drivers to make their way out on to 19.

Making some small changes to the signals there would make a big difference. Specifically, adding a protected left turn arrow for east and westbound traffic.

"And that would save a lot of accidents because really, it's the only thing missing from this intersection," Demers said. "There's turning arrows in every single direction except for the one heading north."

Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation, which is looking into the issue.

"We have issued a request to Pasco County to change out one of the signal heads at this intersection (from a three-section to a five-section), which will allow for a westbound left turn phase as requested by the citizen," said FDOT's Kris Carson.

Once that change is made, here is how it will work: The westbound traffic will get a bit of lead time on their release.

However, once the eastbound traffic is released, both directions will see that protected green left turn arrow.
