BRANDON, Fla. — Drivers in the city of Brandon who use the upper deck of the Selmon Expressway are becoming increasingly frustrated with drivers who won't wait their turn at the end of the road.

It results in big backups in the express lanes and cars using the right shoulder as a lane of traffic.

"And then, when you're looking at the bottom, you're sitting up there waiting and everybody's cutting over right at the last second," said Brenda Parrish, who reached out to Real Time Traffic Reporter Chuck Henson.

"Cutting over, cutting over, cutting over right at the last second, and that's one of the reasons why it gets backed way up the ramp like that."

The issue is the right turn at the end of the ramp.

The right turn lane at Twiggs Street is short, and once it fills up, the next driver waiting in that lane ends up on the right shoulder, as does the next driver, and the next - until the shoulder is filed with cars all wanting to turn right.

Those folks believe they are doing the right thing by getting out of the traffic lanes.

For those in the right lane wanting to turn right, it's a different story.

"As a matter of fact, I've had people literally cursing at me," Parrish said. "They roll the window down, especially if there's a passenger, they will roll the window down and yell at me that we're in the emergency lane, because we are."

It's frustrating for everyone, but something Parrish said can easily be fixed.

"I'd really like them to add another lane for turners to turn onto Twiggs Street because there's also a long back of people turning on to Kennedy, and between those two right lanes it gets crazy."

Sue Chrzan with the Expressway Authority said it's working on that.

"We have proposed adding two turn lanes to the REL at Twiggs Street, which requires a partnership with the city of Tampa," Chrzan said. "Once approved, the design-build project would move faster than most projects of this type. If all goes as planned, we anticipate beginning procurement process in the summer."

Another suggestion for Brandon drivers would be to stay in the local lanes and exit at downtown at Kennedy.
