MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — A 3-year-old boy was killed on the South Sunshine Skyway Bridge Fishing Pier late Saturday afternoon after being struck by a pickup truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At around 4:50 p.m., the toddler was walking behind a parked vehicle, trying to cross the northbound travel lane of the pier when he was struck by the front right of a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, stated the FHP in a news release.

The FHP stated that the unnamed boy from Bowling Green was ran over and that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The child’s parents were in the vicinity of  the west side of the pier at the time of the incident. The crash is tragic and remains under investigation ...," Lt. Gregory S. Bueno of the FHP told Spectrum Bay News 9. 

The truck’s 19-year-old driver from Lutz had no injuries and the unnamed man has not been charged, the FHP stated.
