A new face has joined The Weather Experts team at Spectrum News 13. Meteorologist Zach Covey will bring you the weather every weekend morning.

What You Need To Know

  • Zach is the new weekend morning meteorologist at Spectrum News 13

  • He received his meteorology degree from Florida State University

  • Zach has covered many big weather events

  • If you see him, say hi to him and his dog, Oliver

From a young age, Zach knew he loved weather. As a military brat who lived all over the world, he got to experience various climates, from Germany, which provided some harsh winters and heavy snows, to Virginia, where severe storms and drastic heat waves happened frequently.

Experiencing these climates first hand shaped Zach's love for weather.

Zach is a graduate of the esteemed meteorology program at Florida State University. While there, Zach found a passion for tropical weather, and studied under some of the top tropical forecasters in the nation.

He brings his hurricane expertise to News 13 and prides himself in his no hype, just facts forecast. Whenever a tropical system is brewing, you can count on Zach to provide around-the-clock coverage to keep you and your family safe.

Before coming to Orlando, Zach worked in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he was a morning meteorologist and hurricane specialist. He's covered several hurricanes in his short career, including Hurricanes Harvey in 2017, Florence in 2018, Dorian in 2019, Eta in 2020 and Elsa in 2021.

Florence continues to be the benchmark storm for Zach, where he did 3 hours of wall-to-wall tornado coverage by himself as Florence moved ashore in the Carolinas. He's credited with providing warning to several communities in the early morning hours as an EF1 tornado moved through Columbus County, N.C.

When Zach isn't focusing on tropical systems or bringing you the forecast on-air, he's most likely following sports scores. Since living in Washington D.C. at an early age, Zach grew up a Washington fan for most every sport.

It's been a tough life growing up a fan of the Washington Wizards, Commanders and Nationals. However, Zach was lucky enough to attend a playoff game for the Washington Capitals the year they won the Stanley Cup. To this day, Zach still credits that as a top 5 life event.

You'll also find Zach cheering for his Florida State Seminoles every week.

He also has a dog he adopted while working his first job in El Paso, Texas. His dog, Oliver, is a labrador mix and weighs only 20 pounds. Zach adopted Oliver from the city's animal shelter and gave him a new lease on life after his previous owners abandoned him in the desert.

If you see Zach around town, say hi. He's familiar with Orlando already, but he always looks for new recommendations for food, drinks and entertainment.
