The Coke Zero 400 is now over in Daytona Beach after a late start due to some rain. But none of that deterred fans from coming out to celebrate this holiday weekend at the raceway.

  • The rain didn't deter fans from enjoying the Coke Zero 400
  • Some set up makeshift tents in the infield to stay dry

In the infield, there were many characters decked out from head to toe in red, white and blue. Fans said this weekend was all about fast cars and freedom.

Despite an afternoon downpour, the infield was flooded with fans having a good time.

“You can’t come to Florida and expect that you’re not going to have a little bit of rain," Becky Lehnerz said. "It cools things down. It’s all fabulous"

One group of friends in the infield, meets at the Daytona International Speedway every year for the Fourth of July weekend. Most of them served in the military and traveled from all over the state.

On Saturday, they setup some makeshift tents in the infield between their two RVs to stay dry. It's all right next to their portable above ground pool.

“Drinking beer and eating a lot of good food and watching a fabulous race and playing corn hole," Lehnerz said. "Absolutely.”

Of course food was a main event at the raceway. There were many grills and smokers working around the clock.

“This has actually been cooking since yesterday," Randolph Arbaugh said. "For 15 hours.”

Around every turn, there were RVs decked out with flags, pinwheels and other patriotic tributes. But it was the fashion choices that turned heads.

“4.99 running shorts," Nick Clark said. "Patriotism right here. Some fanny packs, versatility right here. Convenience. Not the most stylish thing, but we’re gonna bring it back.”

Two men decked out in a variety of red, white and blue accessories shared their good time and American spirit everywhere they went - rolling their cooler of beer throughout the infield

“It’s about the greatest country – America – in the world coming to celebrate everyone together and having a good time and have a couple beers while we’re at it," Clark said.

In keeping with the patriotic theme for this holiday weekend, throughout this three day event for the Coke Zero 400, three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients were saluted in person at the raceway.

It is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force, which is only bestowed upon an individual serving in the armed forces.
