The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says earlier this afternoon an off-duty deputy from the Hernando SO and an off-duty officer from Tampa Police were involved in a shooting near Orchard Parkway in Spring Hill.

Deputies say the two men were attending a social gathering together.  Just after 1 p.m. a naked female arrived at the gathering with a weapon and approached Hernando County detective Rocky Howard, and Tampa Police officer William Mechler.  That's when one or both of the law enforcement officers fired their weapons.

No word on what type of weapon the woman had, but deputies say she was behaving irrationally.

"I can tell you that she was not part of the gathering nor was she invited to the gathering. So, it wasn't like she was invited to the group.  She actually came up uninvited," said Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhaus.

Neighbor Steve Hulgin said the area is usually very quiet.

"It's a very very quiet street. I mean we all have 10 acre parcels here and ah it's just a nice quiet street.  It's just strange," said Hulgin.

The woman died at the scene.  The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation.  Both Howard and Mechler have been placed on routine administrative leave.
