Officials have identified a man and woman shot as they sat in a vehicle on East Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa early Sunday morning.

According to Tampa Police officials, Jyansis Ellis, 26, and Malik Majied, 21, both of Tampa, were sitting in a vehicle at Nick’s Gyro & Subs, at 3500 block of E. Hillsborough Ave., when they were shot by an unknown suspect around 3:20 a.m.

Officials said Majied was able to drive from the scene, but made it one block to North 34 Street. An off-duty Tampa Police officer was getting gas in the area and approached the vehicle. The officer performed CPR on Ellis and called for assistance.

Ellis died at the scene and Majied sustained what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. On Monday, officials announced Majied's condition was improving.

Detectives said they do not believe this shooting was a random act of violence and are pursuing multiple active leads in the case.

The suspect is described as a black male, 6', with a baseball hat, a scarf around his face and wearing dark clothing. The suspect has not been identified.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Tampa Police Department at 813-231-6130.
