Part of the mystery that followed after a human leg washed ashore behind a St. Petersburg beach home was solved Tuesday.

According to Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies, the leg belongs to 38-year-old Kelly M. Moriarty of Bradenton.

But now officials are trying to determined what happened to Moriarty. A missing person case remains active for Moriarty and 62-year-old Doris Carter, who investigators say is Moriarty's romantic partner.

Moriarty has not been seen or heard from since December. She was reported missing by her family January 27.

Investigating the case

Detectives have not determined an initial crime scene of where the leg may have been severed.

Officials are also looking for Carter, who was last seen with Moriarty in Plant City on Dec. 16.

On Dec. 20, Moriarty's car was found abandoned on State Road 62 in Parrish and she stopped paying rent at her Bradenton apartment. Officials said no evidence of a crime was found inside of the car and investigators said they have no information about where the women may have gone.

Investigators said a search of Moriarty's apartment did not yield any results. Officials said nothing was out of place, a Christmas tree was still lit up with unwrapped presents under the tree.

Deputies say the two women have been romantically linked for the past two years.

Carter's live-in daughter reported her mom missing on January 29. She told detectives it wasn't uncommon for both of them to be away for extended periods of time.
