Going into The Hunger Games opening night at the Largo Mall, Bill Brown, the owner of William Dean Chocolates, was just like millions of others.

“I go to see a movie every week, and that was my Friday movie,” Brown said.

Having never read the books, Brown didn’t know what to expect. But about a half-hour into the movie, he saw something that almost made him fall out of his chair.

It is the scene in which the main characters, Katniss and Peeta, are on a train heading for the Capitol. On a tray are rich foods they never could have imagined living in District 12. In the middle of the screen, Brown noticed one of the chocolates: a purple, green dotted port with fig truffle.

“They’re very distinctive colors,” Brown said.

Almost not believing it, Brown went back to watch the movie four more times and noticed that even more of his work was used as props.

“Three of the chocolates were definitely there, and they’re actually in four scenes that you can actually see them,” Brown said.

Brown learned through the movie’s food stylist that some of the food was purchased near where the movie was filmed. William Dean Chocolates are carried at Dean & Deluca in Charlotte, N.C.

“It affirmed that what we’re doing here, trying to make little pieces of art; somebody actually interpreted it the same way,” Brown said.

Fans of the movie are now coming in, specifically asking for the colorful chocolate concoctions that they saw on the big screen. Brown says he’s taken a lot of calls from grandparents wanting the buy the treats for their teenagers.

“It’s kind of a novelty thing for people to say, 'hey, this was in this major film, and these are the pieces, and you can have them too,' ” Brown said.

It’s exactly why Marcia Ruotsinoja made it a mandatory stop on her birthday. Before the movie and a subsequent Tampa Bay Times article about WDC's small role in the movie, Ruotsinoja didn’t even know the store existed.

“Never in my life seen chocolate that was so brightly colored, and it’s very special to eat something from a movie,” Ruotsinoja said.

Brown says there is one big difference from the movie to his store in Belleair Bluffs.

“The difference is you don’t have to kill anybody here to get the chocolates,” Brown said.

If you want to visit the store, it’s located at 2790 W Bay Drive, in Belleair Bluffs.
