St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster is putting an end to plans for a new police station in the city, according to Bay News 9 partner, the Tampa Bay Times.

Foster told the Times there isn't enough money to fund the $64 million project.

Plans to replace the old and outdated building have been in place for years.

The current building has multiple problems, including not being built to withstand hurricanes and are not up to ADA standards or fire and building codes.

Mike McDonald, from the St. Petersburg Police Department, told Bay News 9 some buildings have asbestos. Others have mold issues and old pipes cause sewage problems.

The headquarters also has poor site security and no secure sallyport to transfer prisoners. Also, the interview rooms have no glass walls for viewing and inadequate recording capabilities.

The city raised some money towards the new building through the penny tax, but they still are only about half way to raising the needed funds.

In December, Bay News 9 and the Times conducted an exclusive poll asking St. Petersburg residents their thoughts on the new building. A majority, 56 percent, of residents said they were against the high-cost construction. Only 26 percent approved of the expense. The remainder were undecided.
