A man wanted on two counts of attempted murder charges couldn’t get past a Hillsborough County detention deputy who thought he looked familiar.

Plant City Police say when they arrested the suspect on a petit theft charge he gave them a fake name.

But when the suspect was booked into the Orient Road Jail a fingerprint scan revealed the man's real name - Arturo Zeretuch, 23. But the scan did not show that he was wanted on any warrants.

That's where Detention Deputy Troy Donovan's memory came in.

Donovan says he'd been looking at the Hillsborough Crime Stoppers website earlier that day and immediately recognized Zeretuche was wanted for two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

“I look at different data bases that Hillsborough County has set up in the computer,” Donovan said. “And it just so happens I glanced at Crime Stoppers, usually do it once or twice a week.”

Donovan said Zeretuche was not happy his alias did not work.

“As soon as I put him in this holding cell here that another deputy said he punched the wall with his hands pretty hard because he knew he got caught,” Donovan said.

Donovan said Zeretuche only had a $250 bond on the theft charge.

“What could’ve happened if I didn’t catch the name difference? The whole record would’ve went back to the records section. They might not have caught it. The individual could’ve bonded out,” he said.

“In the end, technology and fingerprint technology might have identified this guy,” said Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office Col. Jim Previtera. “But it sure is nice to have human technology on the front end grab it like that and give us instant feedback that a computer is not going to give us.”

Deputies say they'd been searching for Zeretuche for almost three years and believed he was in Mexico.

“It was kind of nice having him delivered right to our front door,” Previtera said.

Zerutuche is accused of shooting a man in the back that left the victim paralyzed from the waist down in June of 2009.

Speaking about Donovan, Previtera said “We’re pretty proud of what he did. “This is a guy who went above and beyond and we’re going to recognize him for it because it truly speaks highly of his dedication to the people of this county.”
