The husband of a Plant City woman has been arrested after she was attacked and savagely beaten with a hammer as she slept early Monday.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's detectives said 33-year-old Dawn Young's skull was cracked in at least six places as she was attacked by her husband, Chris Young, in the couple's Sparkman Road home.

Detectives said Young woke up to find herself covered in blood, with her husband standing beside her.  Chris Young the fled the home with his wife's cell phone so she could not call for help, deputies said.

After her husband allegedly beat her at the couple's home, Dawn Young left her children, but told them help would be on the way. She drove to her mother's house, but found the gate locked.

Young got back in the car and drove herself to South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, then was transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.

The victim's mother, Clara Miller, was brought to tears realizing she nearly lost her daughter as she spoke exclusively with Bay News 9 on Wednesday.

"He almost took her from me," Miller said. "He was so mean to the kids and then to her. How did he do something like that to her?"

Throughout the ordeal, her mother said, all she could think about was her children.

"Oh, she's a good momma," Miller said. "She's a good momma."

After undergoing emergency surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Young's children went right back to their mother's side.

Chris Young is facing attempted murder charges. Detectives said he admitted to hitting his wife in the head with a hammer.
