A racing boat in flames sent smoke shooting high above beaches near Sarasota on Sunday.

According to 2012 Suncoast Offshore Super Boat Grand Prix spokesperson Roderick Cox, the Miss Geico boat was performing a test run on the course when it caught fire.

Two people on the boat were not injured and were rescued after it caught fire around 6 p.m. off Lido Beach.

Cox said preliminary indications show the fire was caused by electrical malfunction, but an official investigation will determine the exact cause of the fire.

The boat is virtually destroyed, Cox said. The Grand Prix is Sunday.
